President Bush greeted by the Manager of Cactus Cantina.

The president and Laura Bush decided one night this month that it was time for a night out in Washington. Shortly after 7 p.m. on Jan. 15, they walked through the doors of the Cactus Cantina on Wisconsin Avenue NW and into a dining room filled with about 250 unsuspecting locals. Their table was near the back, away from the windows. She got the fajitas. He got the cheese enchilada.

A popular spot for any fans of tequila or authentic Tex-Mex, Cactus Cantina is also on the circuit for Cleveland Park neighbors, primarily young professionals and married persons with children who appreciate good food and drink. Appetizers include Mexican soup and nachos priced between $3.95 and $9.95; entrees featuring mesquite chicken or ribs to quail or broiled shrimp and combination platters are priced between $11 and $16.

My fiance and I haven't found a better TexMex restaurant anywhere in the North. They have excellent Margaritas, wonderful chips and salsa and the best mesquite grilled beef fajitas either of us has ever had. Everything at this restaurant is made fresh, with fresh ingredients. If you have kids, they'll love watching the tortillas made as you wait for your table.
